Oh, woo. Look at the time. I gotta get to bed. I still gotta brush my teeth, feed the hog, still got some homework to do, still got those bills to pay

I taught Christopher how to mow the lawn on Friday. He was an eager student and did a really great job. He is hoping to gain some lawn mowing clients and earn money.

Mowing the lawn was my job since I was in the 4th grade. I HATED it. Our lawn was tiny but I still hated it. I remember when we bought our new lawn mower. I had really short hair and the salesman said that the mower would be perfect for me, "Right, Son?" I wanted to kick him.

I used to pray for rain so I wouldn't have to mow. I remember in the 7th grade, I'd be lined up in the bus line waiting for Mrs. Bauer to let us go and asking her if it was supposed to rain that afternoon. I think I asked her every day. Finally she quizzed me on why did I want it to rain so much. I told her and she gave me some "fun" tips on lawn mowing like mow patterns into it. The tips ended up being not really that fun.

When I got married, I knew I would never have to mow the lawn again. Mowing the lawn is the man's job. I think that since we've been married, I've done it maybe 5 times. Under protest, of course.

Now it's Christopher's turn to carry the mantle of "lawn mower" for the Vos house. Luckily for me, I've got 4 boys in a row that can hand down that mantle for the next 14 years. By then, maybe I can afford lawn service.

BABY PREP UPDATE: Cradle is in and cleaned! Garage is organized. Check one off my list and one off Chris'! Hooray for us! And I'm on AOGG book 3. I hated book 2. It was so boring. Can't believe I never noticed before.

"Lloyd, See you around maybe."

Today was Christopher's graduation from elementary school. It was so enjoyable to watch Christopher during the ceremony. He sang enthusiastically, he loved watching the video about his class and he graciously accepted his certificate from his teacher. I love how Christopher is so willing to love just doing what he does. He's a great son.

One of the mom's there was crying buckets. I wasn't even close to tears. He's not leaving...he's just going to a different school. See me in 8 years when he goes on his mission. I'll need the buckets then.

Happy Birthday, Sunny Son!

Today is Christopher's 10th birthday! It is amazing to me that he is already 10 years old. Seems like just yesterday I held him as a newborn. Christopher was born 10 days early and I was quite caught off guard when my water broke on the afternoon of February 7, 1998. Chris' parents were visiting us in East Lansing that day and his mom and I had spent the afternoon shopping at Meijer for what seemed like a million 6-packs of Diet Orange Crush for Chris' uncle. He couldn't get this kind of pop up in St. Ignace and we found it at Meijer and loaded it from the cart to the car and then from my car into her car. Maybe it was all that lifting and straining with the pop, but soon after we returned home, I felt a little "pop" and knew my water broke. The funny thing was that there wasn't a gush of water like in the movies, just a little trickle. I called my midwife who recommended that I go to the hospital to be checked. Chris was at work and we couldn't get in touch with him to take me so my FIL had to take me. He got a kick out of telling the hospital staff that it was his baby. I wasn't so amused.

I got checked and, yes indeed, my water had broken. I was admitted and started walking to get the labor going. This was about 5pm. Chris made it to the hospital and we spent the evening watching the opening ceremonies for the Nagano, Japan Olympics. And breathing through contractions. Finally at 11:30 I was ready to push and did so for 7 minutes and out plopped this beautiful little boy weighing 8lbs 9oz. We didn't know the gender of Christopher before this moment and I had been sure that he was going to be a girl. I was so shocked that I said, "A boy? Does he have a penis?" The midwife and nurse thought this was pretty funny and assured me that he did, in fact, have the required boy parts. He was very beautiful and sweet and I held him in my arms and felt wonderful and scared at the same time.

My Emily was the light of my life and here was this stranger, a boy to boot, that I was supposed to love too. I didn't know how I could do it. I remember calling Chris from the hospital several times during the night, crying and asking him to reassure me that I could be a good mother to two children. The next day, little Em came to visit me and the new baby at the hospital. She was 23 months old and wearing the cutest little yellow outfit. I will never forget the moment she was lifted onto the hospital bed and reached out to touch her new little brother. My heart grew that moment to have enough love for both of these little children. I had lots of visitors that day including my dad and sister and many friends. The Erekson's brought me a cake with the phrase, "He has a penis!" in frosting in honor of my question right after he was born. All the nurses wanted to have a piece of the "penis" cake. To clarify, it didn't depict a penis, just had the word on it.

I spent some very challenging weeks at home over the next bit. Emily was trying to find her place in our new family dynamic and she did this by being as naughty as possible. Christopher could never have enough to eat and I spent ALOT of time feeding him. Reading my journal from this time reminds me of the frustration that I felt. It was difficult. Christopher grew into a wonderfully sweet tempered infant. My nickname for him was the "Sunny Son" because he was so sunny. Always a smile for me. He has continued this trend to become a very wonderfully sweet tempered child. I look at him now and often think that his future wife is going to be very lucky. He is kind, considerate and always sensitive of others feelings. I love my Sunny Son. Happy Birthday, Christopher!

That parthenon backdrop is optional.

Last night was the Plymouth Canton Steelers B.O.S.S. Football Banquet. The "Banquet of Super Stars" was held at the Hellenic Cultural Center located adjacent to the Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Westland. The building was decked out in 250 gold and black balloons and Steelers banners. (I transported the balloons from the dollar store to the banquet hall that day. I had to make two trips, but finally got them there with only two casualties. At one point, I could only see balloons when I looked back and two little feet sticking out. Cameron's.) We had a nice dinner, not Greek food like I hoped, but really good. The program consisted of trophies being handed out to the players and cheerleaders by their coaches. The coach said something about each player. Christopher's coach said he was a great player and everyone knows the name CV! Also Coach talked about Christopher's dedication and how he would practice on Monday and Saturday even though there were not scheduled practices those days. Christopher got his trophy that even had his name inscribed on it. He got a football pin too. I was so proud of him and his hard work this season. In the room were baskets donated by local businesses that the Steelers were raffling off. Everyone got one free ticket and you could purchase more for more chances to win. I won the "Ladies Workout Basket." Lucky me. Also, there was a silent auction for all kinds of sports memorabilia and tickets and picture collages. Chris' parents bid on and won a Spartan football signed by the players and coaches this season and a Spartan helmet worn during the 1989 Rose Bowl Game. The football was for Chris and the helmet was for Christopher. They were thrilled! It was an excellent ending to a great season for Christopher. Let's hope that next season has a few less Sunday games and everything will be just perfect.

Maybe someday...

Christopher and Grandpa

Christopher took his helmet right over to show Coach Lanava.

Christopher got the helmet signed by Vince Tata, #61, who played for MSU from 85-89. He was on the 89 RoseBowl team. The Rose Bowl ring he wore was awesome! He is a coach for the Steelers.

Life's just a game of inches -- and so is football

Christopher played a valiant game against the Lakes Area Hawks. The Steelers came up short and lost by 1 stinkin' point. Christopher gave it his all with his offensive line blocking, opening holes for the ball carrier to get through. The Steelers still have a chance of going to the playoffs if the Redskins lose next Saturday. Go Steelers! No Quit!
