Top Five Favorite Grocery Stores

I hate big grocery stores. I hate them with a passion. I feel exhausted just thinking about pushing my cart up and down the enormous aisles. It is so tiring. I hate any kind of "Super Marts." I do not want to buy my food, clothing and lawn mower all in one place.

1. Churchills, Toledo, Ohio. I seriously dream of Churchills all the time. The potato salad. The cookies. The nice cashiers and baggers. If I had a million dollars I would reopen it and live there.

2. Country Markett, East Lansing, Michigan. Free Pop while you shop!

3. Sofo Foods, Toledo, Ohio. Meatballs to die for.

4. The Andersons, Maumee Ohio. Technically not a "grocery" store but they do sell food and, breaking an above rule, lawnmowers.

5. Holiday Market, Canton, Michigan. Don't really love it but felt bad about not including anywhere near where I currently live.

Top Five Favorite Teachers

1. Mr. Scott Robertson--Taught me history for two years at St. Ursula. He was an incredible teacher. He knew his subject, he liked adolescents and working with us and you left his class actually enjoying history. He didn't start out as a teacher but worked somewhere else, went back to school and got his degree later in life. Mr. Robertson died my junior year of a heart attack. Everyone in our class was devastated. He was irreplaceable.

2. Mrs. Jane McGee--Also had Mrs. McGee in high school. I started out with her in sophomore Religion and gave her such a hard time. She was a little aloof at first and I had a hard time getting to know her. Finally, towards the end of the year, I really started enjoying her as a teacher and as a person. She had several of us over to her house and cooked us dinner. I remember it being really fun. My junior year, I couldn't fit the Latin class that I needed into my schedule, and she offered to teach me before school, on her own time. I came in early and had a one-on-one class with her. I think back now and I am amazed at that kind of dedication to a student.

3. Miss Heuring, now Mrs. Rodgers--I had Miss Heuring for the 4th grade. She was pretty and nice. I wanted to be just like her. She was great especially coming off Mrs. Molly Mott in the 3rd grade who was the meanest teacher EVER.

4. Sister Mary Caroline--Sister Caroline taught 8th grade math. She was a nun and old and mean but had a fun streak in her and somehow I was able to get on her good side and we really hit it off. Because of her, I was able to get my scholarship to St. Ursula.

5. Mr. Roy Williamson--I had Mr. Williamson for junior American Literature. He was a bit eccentric (gay) and spoke with a very interesting accent (gay), but he was mesmerizing to listen to. Most everything I learned about writing, I learned from him. I'll never forget his recitation of Edgar Allen Poe's, "The Bells."

Top Five Favorite Outfits I Have Worn in My Life

1. My prom dress from Senior Prom. Looking back at the picture, I realize that the style I chose made my hips look HUGE. What was I thinking?

2. Black Girbaud jeans with this black shirt I wore dancing to "The Palace," in Provo. Is The Palace still there? My roommates assured me that my butt looked totally hot in those jeans.

3. My wedding dress.

4. This pair of plaid shorts and shirt from the Gap that I bought in 1992. They were totally cool and I loved them.

5. One piece, jumper maternity outfit that I had when I was pregnant with Emily. It was so cute! I loved wearing it.

Top Five Favorite Classical Works of Art

1. "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Seurat

Started out as my favorite because of it's moment of glory in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Now I really love it and hope to see it someday in person at the Art Institute of Chicago

2. "Vitrana" by Dominick Labino

I can remember staring at this as a child on tours of the Toledo Museum of Art. I would sit on the floor as the docent talked and try to choose my favorite square. I have loved Labino since my parents took me to his studio/workshop to meet him. I hope to have a very large collection someday. Currently, I have 1 piece by him that I inherited from my parents.

3. "The Bear Dance" by William Beard

My dad gave me a print of this for my birthday one year and I love it. I had it in the children's room when Emily and Christopher were little. Christopher took a nap one day, took it out of the frame and ripped into little pieces all over their room. What a stinker! I haven't replaced it but I hope to someday.

4. "Girl Among the Hollyhocks" by John Hafen

This painting is hanging over my desk and in the bride's room at the Toronto Temple where Chris and I were sealed. I love it.

5. I don't know the name and artist of this one but it is two girls in a boat on a little river or maybe picnicing by a little river. One has brown hair and one has red hair. It was hanging on the wall of my best girlfriend's room when we were girls. I used to imagine that it was she and I. I wish I could find it but I just don't know the name or artist.

***Thank you to Suzy for finding this for me by accident! The painting that I love is called, "The Nut Gatherers" by William Adolphe Bouguereau. The original hangs in the DIA. I was obviously the girl on the right and my friend, Eliza, was girl on left. There don't appear to be any rivers nearby them so my memory isn't as great as I thought it was. I'm going to have to get a copy of this for Emily's room someday.

Weekly Top Five 12/31/2007

My last top five of the year! These are the top five Christmas songs that I hate.

1. "Please, Daddy, Don't Get Drunk This Christmas" by John Denver. Think I'm making this one up? I'm not. My mom's family used to sing it and she hated it too. Check it out here.

2. Any Christmas song sung by *nSync or Backstreet Boys or any boy band. I don't want to spend one more Christmas listening to their music.

3. "Santa Baby" by Madonna or Eartha Kitt. The epitome of materialism.

4. "Blue Christmas" by Elvis. I don't like pretty much anything by Elvis. Especially Christmas music.

5. "Christmas Eve on Woodward Avenue" by Karen Newman. Woodward is the last place on earth I'd want to be on Christmas Eve. I really dislike local celebrities who think they are something great.

It's not going in the yard, Russ. It's going in the living room.

We finally got our tree/house decorated! My Weekly Top Five for this week is My Top Five Favorite Christmas Ornaments on our Tree/Decorations around the house.

1. My mom's creche. I know it is just from Home Interiors and not very expensive or fancy, but it is not Christmas without this nativity set up on the piano.

2. Wooden Snowman Ornament. My parents made a ton of these wooden, hand-painted ornaments for their first Christmas tree. This is the only one that is left.3. All of the wonderful plastic canvas, beaded, wooden hand-made ornaments by Chris' grandma.4. Emily's "Baby's First Christmas" Ornament. It is a momma bunny holding a baby bunny. So precious.5. These are a snowman couple that my mom made for a Relief Society project. I don't know how many more christmas' they can survive. You can see the styrofoam cup peeking out of the bottom of the one on the left. They are cute!

Honorable Mention: Willow tree nativity

Stockings Chris and I made our first Christmas together.

Another of Ma's Handmade ornaments

One of Chris' Snoopy ornaments
